The halls of the Arendelle castle were bright and cheery, warm sunlight poured through the open windows, a late spring breeze ruffled the curtains that hung at the sides of the hinged glass panes. Chatter and laughter could be heard from the town square just outside the open castle gate as the townsfolk bustled about. Normally the exciting sounds and warm spring air would have attracted the kingdom's lovable and bubbly Princess Anna. The princess usually loved to race through the front door, down the steps, and out the castle gates so she could run through the city and meet anyone new, but on this particular day she was curled up in her bed with the blankets pulled up to cover all but the top of her head. Frizzled strawberry blonde hair stuck out the top of the bed covers, the young princess buried deep in the in the fabric of her sheets and blankets. She was a little warm under there, but she didn't care, she just didn't feel up to caring about much at that moment.
A soft knock on the door causes Anna to squirm a little, the tiny movement bringing a small groan from under the covers. The unlatching of the door can easily be heard as the knob is turned and the barrier is opened to allow entrance to the visitor.
"Anna?" The soft, yet unmistakable voice of the queen flows through the room. The door clicks closed again once the older woman had entered. Queen Elsa makes her way to the bed, worry was very prominant on her face as her cool blue eyes take in the lumpy figure under the blankets and the little bit of hair that was poking out on top. Slowly she reached out a hand and gripped the top of the bed covers, the temperature of the room lowering slightly as the queen's worry grew. Elsa had just pulled the blankets away from Anna's face when the princess shot up, her head nearly colliding with her sister's chin, and dodged around the other woman only to dart out of the room with her hand over her mouth. "Anna!" The queen exclaims in surprise, just barely moving her face out of the way of her sister's head.
Elsa had left her sister's bedroom in time to see the door to the bathroom just down the hall click shut, followed by the unmistakable sound of someone retching into the toilet. The platinum blonde queen was quick to figure out who was behind the bathroom door. When the sound of the retching let up, Elsa raps her knuckles on the painted wood. After a few long seconds, and the sound of flushing, the knock was answered by a very disheveled looking Anna. The princess was flushed, a slight sheen of sweat coated her freckled face, her electric blue eyes were somewhat glazed as she looked at her older sister. She tried her best at a smile for a few seconds before she threw herself into Elsa's arms.
The older woman welcomes her sister with open arms, letting the young princess gain some comfort from the embrace. A delicate hand comes up to run over Anna's messy head of hair, causing the princess to heave a small sigh of comfort. The princess was enjoying the coolness of her sister's body, her lungs pulling in deep, steadying breaths as the turning of her stomach calmed a bit.
"Not feeling well?" The Queen asked her arctic hues peering down at her younger sister.
"No," The strawberry blonde groans out, shaking her head, which turned out to be a mistake as the movement brought a new wave of dizziness and nausea over her body. Swiftly, the princess untangles herself from the Queen and darts back into the bathroom for a second round of vomiting.
Elsa composed herself quicker this time and followed Anna into the room. Silently, she knelt by her sister, one hand running through and curling around Anna's hair to hold it away from her face, and the other rubbed in small circles on her back as the princess heaved into the toilet. It felt like an eternity to Elsa before Anna was done emptying her stomach into the porcelain bowl, the Queen didn't enjoy seeing her younger sister suffering, even with something as possibly minor as a small tummy bug.
This has to be something more than a simple bout of the stomach flu, Elsa thought to herself as Anna flushed the dirty toilet water. The older woman thought back to the days prior as she took her sister into her arms once more, cradling the princess as she worked at steadying her breath. Little flashbacks of the past week and a half or so went through Elsa's mind as she held Anna against her body, each memory of the past fourteen days always had a visual of Anna throwing up in the mornings and at the most random times during the rest of the day. Now that the Queen really began to think about it, her sister wasn't acting much like herself, on top of all the vomiting. Anna was usually bubbly and full of energy, it was a normal sight to see the strawberry blonde princess running through the halls for whatever reason, but now the young girl was somewhat sluggish and always seemed to be in some sort of discomfort.
"Ow," The groan of pain from Anna pulled Elsa back to the present, her arms adjusting as her sister seemed to curl in on her stomach.
"Anna, what's wrong?" The Queen's voice was full of worry and fear, frost began to form on the tiled floor around the two.
"My stomach hurts," The princess couldn't help but whine. She uncurled from around her stomach and leaned back into her sister once more as the soreness in her abdomen seemed to lessen for the moment. "It's been sore for a while," She went on to explain, she noticed the temperature in the room had dropped a bit but found that it helped her feel better. Her fingers traced in the frost at her side as she let her body bask in the coolness of the air.
Elsa listened quietly to what her sister had to say, her cool blue eyes watching Anna's fingers tracing patterns in the frosty floor. Her worry lessened as her mind came up with the understandable cause of Anna's current condition. A relieved sigh escapes her, the room heating back to its previous temperature.
"Oh, it's that time of the month is it?" The Queen couldn't help but chuckle as her fear trickled away.
Anna's fingers stopped moving in the frost after she heard Elsa's question. There was a long moment of silence before Anna was ready to answer.
"No," The princess says with a small shake of her frizzled head. She was silent for another few seconds before finishing her reply, "That issue is a few weeks late." Anna sheepishly bites her lip and keeps her gaze diverted to the floor.
"Wait....What?" Elsa said as her brain processed what her sister said, her arctic blue eyes stared in confused shock at the back of Anna's head. "How many weeks exactly? What is going on?" She still wasn't entirely sure what her sister was trying to say.
"Four, maybe five weeks," Anna said in a very soft and quiet voice. Elsa could feel Anna's heart beating faster under her arms accompanied by a small tremble running through her body. Anna's breath trembled as she prepared herself for her next statement. "I think I might be...."
".....Pregnant." Elsa finishes in unison with the princess. The room went back and forth from cool to warm for a few seconds and small flurries of snowflakes swirled around the two as a multitude of emotions swirled through the blonde Queen; fear, confusion, shock, and at last happiness.
A smile forms on the Queen's lips as she tightens her hold on her baby sister, hugging her even closer and tighter. "Does Kristoff know?" The older woman asks as Anna began to squirm in the tight hug.
"Too tight!" The princess gasps as she tried to wiggle free from her sister's grasp. Elsa loosens her grip with a small giggle and a quiet "Sorry." Anna takes a minute to catch her breath once more after the constricting before answering. "No," She says with a shake of her head, "He's still away at that Ice Harvesters' Convention, but he should be back next week."
"Oh, that's right." The older sister mused. Elsa smiled again as Anna rested her head back on her shoulder. They sat like that for a while, just enjoying each others company, even if it was on the bathroom floor, until the Queen gave a sigh. "I have a meeting in fifteen minutes."
At those words Anna began to pout, "Do you really have to?" The princess whined, taking the Queen's hands in her own as if that would stop her from leaving.
"You could join if you want," Elsa teased her younger sibling, knowing her sister wasn't a big fan of the big, boring meetings.
"No, no I'm okay." The princess quickly answers, warranting a chuckle from her older sister. "I think I'll go and try to eat something." Anna let go of Elsa's hands and slowly stands, she was feeling better by the minute. The princess slips a little on a patch of frost but is caught by her older sister.
"Careful now," Elsa says, catching her younger sister before she could fall and setting her upright. The two exit the bathroom and head down the hall together, their arms linked together. The princess sighs when they reach the end of the hallway, she enjoyed spending time with her older sister, no matter the circumstance. Anna always found it difficult to part with her older sister, especially at a time like this. The Queen smiled softly and leaned over to peck her younger sister's cheek, she could sense Anna's reluctance to part ways. "You go do what you need to do, we'll hang out later."
"Okay," Anna seemed to brighten at the promise of having more time with Elsa later. She was practically bouncing with the excitement the Queen's promise had sparked in her.
"Take it easy," Elsa couldn't help but chuckle as her sister seemed to be returning to her usual bubbly self. "I don't want you to overexert yourself, Queen's orders." The blonde told her younger sister, taking her hand and giving it a squeeze.
"Yes, Your Majesty," The princess replied with a good-natured eye roll before squeezing her sister's hand back. "I'll be careful." The younger girl promises.
"Good," Elsa says in a satisfied, yet amused tone. She releases her sister's hand and pushes her in the direction of the kitchen. The redhead giggled softly before heading off, a slight bounce to her gait as she took her leave. The Queen took in a deep breath, held it for a few seconds, then let it back out. The last infant to call the castle home was now having one of her own, and the thought left Elsa in a mixture of fear and excitement. With a small shake of her head and a small smile on her face, she turned to head for the conference room.
"What are we in for?" She silently asked herself before entering the room full of foreign dignitaries.
I dunno yet.
